The Fellowship Year
One Year, A Lifetime of Impact
Every September since 1974, a new RWJF HPF cohort arrives in Washington, DC, ready for a transformative year immersed in health policy.
The year begins with a three-month-long orientation including hundreds of briefings, field visits, and seminars with policymakers, researchers, and national leaders. Fellows gain a “mini master’s degree” in health policy, diving deep into topics such as health economics, congressional processes, and the federal decision-making landscape. Along the way, they build the relationships, insights, and confidence needed to navigate Washington, DC.
Armed with this foundation, fellows step into placements across Congress and the Executive Branch. They contribute their expertise directly to legislative and policy work — drafting bills, analyzing proposals, and advising decision-makers on issues that affect millions.
Yet the fellowship year is more than professional training. It fosters a true sense of fellowship — a community of equals bound by shared purpose, collaboration, and lifelong friendship. Fellows support each other, bring their families into the adventure, and together embrace Washington as a living classroom.
Fellows leave not only with unmatched experience but also with the confidence, skills, and networks to lead lasting change. The Fellowship Year is demanding, humbling, and unforgettable — an extraordinary chapter in the lives of those committed to advancing health and shaping policy for the public good.
